A cough may cause symptoms of a tight chest, chest congestion, throat irritation and pain in the chest. If you are suffering from a cough, it may be caused by the flu or the common cold, the croup, bronchitis, allergies, or by a more serious condition, such as emphysema or lung cancer. It is recommended to consult a doctor to determine which cough remedy is right for you.
Humidity
Adding humidity to the air can help soothe and hydrate vocal folds and loosen the mucus in the chest to help stop coughing. Run a humidifier in your bedroom each night to help reduce coughing. Using a humidifier distributes water vapor into the air, which will help soothe coughing and make it easier to breathe. A humidifier may be dangerous if it not cleaned properly because bacteria and mold can build up inside the device. If you do not have a humidifier, run hot water in the shower and shut the door, recommends The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. Sit in the bathroom and breathe in and out slowly to help minimize coughing.
Lemon and Honey
Drinking a mixture of lemon and honey can help soothe a cough, say experts at the Mayo Clinic. Honey is a natural cough suppressant that is safe for use in adults. Do not give honey to children under the age oneof 1, as it can cause infant botulism. Mix hot water, 1 tsp. lemon juice and 1 tsp. honey in a mug, then add more lemon juice or honey to taste, if desired. Sip the mixture slowly and inhale the steam from the hot liquid to help reduce congestion in the chest.
Over-the-counter Cough Suppressants
Over-the-counter cough suppressants, like cough syrups that contain dextromethorphan, are available at drugstores and grocery stores without a prescription. Sally Wenzel, M.D., associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine recommends dextromethorphan to temporarily reduce the severity of dry coughs. Dextromethorphan and other over-the-counter cough suppressants do not help cure a cough and should only be used in moderation, exactly according to the label's instructions.
Cough Drops
Experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest sucking on cough drops, available at the drugstore or grocery store, to prevent a cough. Cough drops help soothe a sore throat due to coughing, and help temporarily reduce the severity of a dry cough. Use cough drops as needed throughout the day to prevent coughing.
