Dandruff is often a result of seborrheic dermatitis, a skin condition that commonly affects the scalp. When you have seborrheic dermatitis, scaling on the scalp can occur and result in the shedding of excess dead skin cells. You have several treatment methods available to combat dandruff at home. If treatment is not effective, speak to your doctor.

Shampoo Often

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, dandruff caused by dry skin can be remedied by shampooing more often. You should shampoo the hair at least once a day. When shampooing, leave the cleanser in place for several minutes before rinsing away with lukewarm water.

Selenium Sulfide

This ingredient is commonly found in shampoos manufactured to treat dandruff. Brand names include Selsun Blue and Dandrex. It commonly comes in strengths of 1 and 2.5 percent. However, the 2.5 percent is not available over the counter and only obtainable through prescription from a doctor.
To use, one to two teaspoons are lathered into the scalp and left in place for a minimum of two minutes before rinsing. The shampoo is often recommended for application two to three times per week.

Zinc Pyrithione

This is another active ingredient found in anti-dandruff shampoos. Common brands that contain zinc pyrithione are Head & Shoulders and ZNP. A teaspoonful is worked into a lather on the scalp and rinsed after several minutes in place. Unless otherwise advised by a doctor, use the zinc pyrithione shampoo twice a week.

Tar Shampoos

If you are suffering from severe dandruff, you may need a stronger type of treatment method. Some makers of tar shampoos include Denorex, Neutrogena T/Gel and Pentrax. Along with skin flaking, a tar shampoo relieves itching associated with the condition.
To avoid skin discoloration, the shampoo must only be applied to the scalp. Wet the hair and apply a liberal amount of tar shampoo onto the scalp. Work into a lather and leave on for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Use the shampoo twice a week.
