Oily hair results from the amount of sebum produced by hair follicles. If you have fine hair, you have a higher number of hairs on your head and increase your chances of having oily hair. Oil sticks to straight hair easier, so this also makes you more likely to have oily hair. A good hair care routine will make even oily hair look fresh and clean.

Shampoo Twice a Day

During high levels of humidity and especially during summer months, oily hair can be shampooed twice a day. Shampooing with a mild shampoo can help remove any excess oil from the hair. Choose a clarifying shampoo without any heavy ingredients.
While you are shampooing, work your fingers over the scalp to extract as much oil as possible. Leave the shampoo on a minimum of five minutes before rinsing. Skip conditioning treatments if you have oily hair. If you do decide to condition, choose a conditioner specially formulated for oily hair.

Prevent Oil Transference

If you have oily hair, you should keep it away from your face. According to the Teens Health website sponsored by the Nemours Foundation, hair should be kept away to avoid clogging the pores on the skin. Hair oil can transfer to the skin and lead to acne breakouts.
The oil on your skin should be controlled as well, since it can transfer to the hair. Cleanse the skin twice a day with a wash that has a low pH in order to control oil production on the face and other areas that the hair may touch. A weekly clay mask on the face can be done to absorb excess oil.
When using any type of skin care products, choose versions that are labeled oil free.

Witch Hazel

In the Doctors Book of Home Remedies on the Mother Nature website, an astringent is recommended to dry up excess oil produced by the scalp. Half witch hazel and half mouthwash can be applied with cotton balls to the scalp. You should do this after shampooing your hair.

Blow Drying

When you allow oily hair to air dry, it is likely to be weighed down and limp. Use a hair dryer on a medium setting to dry hair after bathing. Move the oil away from the roots by flipping your hair over and using a brush to pull it away from the scalp.
