Hand reflexology helps relieve the symptoms of headache. Reflexology is an ancient form of hand and foot massage that originated in China and clears energy blockages from the system. Energy, or chi, is carried around the body through invisible channels called meridians. Blockages along these meridians inhibit the flow of energy, which then give rise to discomfort or illness.
How Hand Reflexology Works
Every part of the human body has a corresponding point on the hands and feet. By massaging these points, the energy blockages in the body can be cleared, restoring the flow of energy and alleviating the discomfort or illness. The corresponding area to the head on the hand is the thumb, so massaging your thumb helps relax the head and bring relief from pain.
Causes of Headache
Headaches are caused by different factors. Stress and tension, blocked sinuses, migraine and stomach disorders are the most common. Hand reflexology can be specifically targeted to one of these conditions or administered to cover all possibilities. For example, in the case of a stress or tension headache, the reflexologist concentrates on the part of the hand that corresponds to the neck area, around the base of the thumb, relieving the tension around the neck and shoulders.
Advantages
Hand reflexology has advantages over the more conventional foot reflexology. It can be practiced unobtrusively anywhere, so when a headache strikes, help is immediately available. You can practice it on yourself or on another person. It also is suitable for both the old and the very young.
Treatment
Treatment consists of a simple massage, using finger and thumb walking techniques, over specific areas of the hand. One treatment normally will relieve a headache, but if you suffer recurring headaches, consider a course of six to eight treatments over a number of weeks, as recommended in the book "Step by Step Reflexology" by Renee Tanner of the International Federation of Reflexologists. Once this is complete, a "top-up" treatment once a month can help keep the headaches from recurring. You may feel as if you are walking on air after a treatment, relaxed but at the same time energized and raring to go.
Warning
Reflexology should never be given to someone fitted with a pacemaker. It is also wise to remember that it is not a substitute for professional medical care but a complement that works alongside your medical team's efforts. Because reflexology also increases the flow of fluids in the body, you may feel thirsty after a treatment, but avoid alcohol, as you may find the treatment increases its effect.
