Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man reaches climax before he or his sexual partner wishes. This becomes a problem in some situations because the penis loses its erection after climax, making continued intercourse difficult or impossible. Many consider premature ejaculation to be a normal circumstance, a belief that evolved from the days when primitive man had to ejaculate quickly in order to inseminate a female before another male attacked him. Today, most cases are considered to be psychological in nature. A man concerned about premature ejaculation should have a physical examination to rule out physical causes; he may then be referred for sex therapy or psychological counseling.
Distraction
Some men can lengthen the time before orgasm by practicing distraction. To try this technique, think of a pleasant distraction, such as a hobby or sports interest, while having intercourse. If needed, ask yourself a fairly difficult question. For example, ask yourself how many days until your birthday and mentally count the number of days. You can also ask yourself the name of every pet you have owned.
Desensitization Cream
Your physician can prescribe a desensitization cream for your penis. The Mayo Clinic explains that the cream is applied for a period of time, and then removed shortly before intercourse. It contains an anesthetic agent such as lidocaine that allows the penis to feel less stimulation during intercourse.
Physical Techniques
Two physical techniques are often prescribed to treat premature ejaculation. The first involves allowing sexual stimulation, and then having your partner squeeze your penis at the area where the head meets the shaft when you feel close to climax. The hold should last for a few seconds, until you have lost the urge to ejaculate. This should be performed several times, followed by a time when orgasm is allowed to occur. This may help you learn to control your ejaculation. Never allow anyone to squeeze your penis in this manner once ejaculation has begun as damage could result.
A second physical technique involves becoming stimulated, and then halting activity for 30 seconds just prior to orgasm. You should repeat this several times, allowing ejaculation the final time. This may help you gain control of your ejaculatory impulse or it may be a technique you choose to incorporate into your regular sexual activity.
Antidepressants
Some physicians prescribe antidepressant medications due to their potential side effect of delaying the time until orgasm. Merck Manuals Home Edition explains that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are antidepressants commonly prescribed for this purpose.
Condom Use
Some men find that condom use causes less stimulation to the penis, allowing them to have intercourse for a longer period of time before reaching climax. Thicker condoms should work better for this purpose.
Sex Therapy or Counseling
A sex therapist can prescribe a variety of sexual techniques designed to prolong intercourse and avoid premature ejaculation. A psychologist or psychiatrist can help you discern issues such as guilt, anxiety, depression or low-self esteem that may be altering your sexual performance. A couples counselor can help with any relationship issues that may be affecting your sex life.
