5 Ways to Relieve a Headache
1. Pamper Yourself
Doctors know that tension and stress can cause you to get a headache. Rather than arming yourself with painkillers when you're feeling rushed, try draping a hot or cold washcloth over your shoulders and around your neck. You also can use an ice pad or a heating pad for the same effect, but be sure not to leave it on for too long. Another great way to reduce headache-stirring tension is to get a massage from a loved one or a professional. Have them rub your temples gently and work their fingers into your neck and shoulders.
2. Try a Pharmaceutical Approach
The fastest way to get rid of a headache usually is with over-the-counter medication. The most common medications you can take are acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Aspirin may also help, but it isn't recommended for children or in large doses. However, don't take any of these medications regularly if you have multiple headaches. Research has shown that overuse of these medicines to treat headaches can induce episodic headaches that are harder to treat.
3. Grab a Cup of Joe
Regular coffee, tea and soda drinkers who lay off the beverages for a day may get caffeine headaches. While you can take a pill for these, it may just be easier to brew some coffee or grab a cold soda instead.
4. Take a Horizontal Break
If you have time and don't want to take medicine to cure your headache, lie down. Closing your eyes can help cure a headache, but you will have a better chance of feeling better if you take a short nap.
5. See a Doctor
It's not a bad idea to visit a doctor if you have frequent headaches, no matter the severity. Headaches sometimes are a symptom of another disease. Severe migraines also can be helped with prescription drugs.
