Obesity has reached an all-time high, with more than 1 billion people overweight and 300 million clinically obese worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Add to that a food industry driven by the high demand for convenience foods and a strained economy, and it's no wonder that many people become overwhelmed by the thought of trying to lose weight on a budget. The reality is, there are a few small things that can be done easily in order to lose weight quickly and inexpensively.

Switch to Water

Eliminating sodas, juices, lattes and other high-calorie beverages is the simplest way to reduce caloric intake and lose weight. There's logic behind the passing of soda taxes in places such as New York City. These non-nutritional beverages add unnecessary costs to grocery bills and also to health care by adding on calories and pounds. Water helps to hydrate and reduce hunger, and promotes efficient digestion and metabolism. Switching to water is something people in any circumstance can do to save money and lose weight.

Prepare Food at Home

In today's fast paced society, many people have become accustomed to the ease and convenience that fast food and processed packaged foods provide. The New York Times reports, "Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software or new cars." It's no secret that fast food, frozen entrees and packaged foods are contributing to expanding waistlines. Most of these foods are high in calories and low in nutritional benefit when compared with things made from fresh whole ingredients at home.

Buy in Bulk

Cost per unit is reduced when you buy in bulk. Stock up on healthy items such as lean meats, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Freeze and store foods in individual containers until they're needed. Whether shopping for a family or one person, buying in bulk is a great way to have plenty of healthy foods available at all times. In addition to saving cash, it will save time from extra shopping trips later.

Inexpensive Workouts

Consider purchasing a membership to a gym without frivolous amenities and with cheaper fees. Search for exercise programming on television, online, or in books to formulate a home workout routine. Browse classified ads for used exercise equipment or make a routine that works with what you have. Use public parks, playgrounds and community centers.

Lifestyle Modification

Incorporate extra activity into daily life. Take the stairs, park in the furthest parking spot, walk to get your mail or wash the car by hand. Find active volunteer opportunities in your community. Instead of watching television, get outdoors. Modifying daily activities will not only burn extra calories for weight loss, but also helps reinforce healthy lifestyle habits that will be beneficial over a lifetime.
