Cellulite is basically a pocket of fat, according to the National Institutes of Health. Fat that develops just under the epidermis pushes up against the skin. But the connective fibers that attach the skin to the muscles pull down the epidermis at the same time. These two forces create the dimpling or rippling appearance of the skin associated with cellulite. While it isn't necessary to treat cellulite, it isn't uncommon for people to want it removed. There are few ways in which this can be done.
Weight Loss
Weight loss is the most beneficial way to reduce the signs of cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. This weight loss is achieved through a combination of diet and exercise, especially exercises that target the legs, hips and buttocks. These three areas of the body commonly develop these pockets of fat. This means running, biking, stair climbing and swimming can all reduce the signs of cellulite. Strength training can also improve the appearance of the skin.
Laser Therapy
Another way to reduce the signs of cellulite is laser therapy, advises the Mayo Clinic. Laser therapy for cellulite uses a diode laser in combination with deep tissue massage. While the laser energy encourages collagen production, the manipulation of tissue promotes better blood circulation and fat drainage. All three factors can reduce dimpling associated with cellulite. Results are typically temporary, lasting about six months. Additional treatments are necessary to maintain the smoother appearance of the skin.
Radiofrequency
The Mayo Clinic also recommends radiofrequency to reduce the signs of cellulite. This form of treatment uses the deep tissue massage seen in laser therapy along with the exposure to infrared light and radio waves. The combination of massage and energy elevates the temperature of the fatty deposits, increasing the circulation of blood and drainage of fat while improving the elasticity of the skin. This reduces the dimpling associated with cellulite for approximately six months. Additional treatments are necessary to maintain the smoother appearance of the skin.
