If you don't have clear skin, you may not want to spend a fortune on products that may or may not work. Also, topical acne treatments can cause adverse skin reactions, such as dryness and irritation. Mild acne can be typically treated at home without the need for a dermatologist. An oatmeal mask can reduce acne inflammation, absorb excess oil and exfoliate dead skin cells.

Step 1

Boil 1 cup of water. Add the water to a bowl filled with 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Spoon 1/4 cup of honey into the bowl. The honey is added to help the oatmeal stick to the face as well as to tone the skin. Mix the ingredients together well and allow it to cool.

Step 2

Use your hands to apply the oatmeal concoction in an even layer over your face. You may want to pull your hair back to avoid getting any of the mixture in it. Keep the oatmeal away from the eye and mouth area during application.

Step 3

Massage your skin gently with your fingertips. This helps the oatmeal to exfoliate your dead skin cells. Then press the oatmeal mixture lightly into your skin. Go over your face completely.

Step 4

Leave the oatmeal mask on for a while. According to the GrannyMed.com website, an oatmeal mask used to treat acne can be left on for approximately 10 to 20 minutes. It should not be left on any longer since it may prove difficult to remove.

Step 5

Rinse off the oatmeal concoction with lukewarm water. Due to the mess, it is easier to remove the mask in the shower. This allows you to shampoo out any excess that may have sneaked into your hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wash your face daily while treating blemishes at home. This removes oil and dirt that can clog pores and lead to future breakouts. If your acne becomes moderate to severe, you may want to make an appointment with a doctor since untreated blemishes can lead to permanent scarring.
  • Avoid squeezing or popping any blemishes you have while treating breakouts at home. This can spread the bacteria and increases your risk of scarring.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup water
  • Bowl
  • 1/2 cup unflavored oatmeal
