Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the tissues and many different healthy organs of the body. The University of Maryland Medical Center describes Lupus flares to include inflammation of the joints, skin rashes, possible complications with heart, lungs or kidneys, as well as fatigue, muscle or joint pain and sensitivity to sunlight. Though the exact cause of Lupus is still unknown, it is thought that a well balanced diet, medication and supplements like fish oil may help its sufferers experience periods of remission from flares.
Function
A study conducted by The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health in Washington, DC, found fish oil, a dietary source of DHA and EPA (omega-3 fatty acids), to have anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these properties, fish oil may be useful in treating autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, which cause inflammation. Your body does not produce these essential fatty acids on its own. Supplementation is necessary in order to see a possible decrease in disease progression and a reduction in fatigue, joint pain and overall inflammation.
Prevention
Omega-3 fatty acids are also useful in preventing coronary heart disease, slowing the progression of plaque in the arteries and decreasing abnormal heartbeats. The Lupus Foundation of America says that women with Lupus are at a higher risk for heart disease. Because of this, fish oil supplements may be especially beneficial for women in the prevention of heart disease, as well as to improve blood pressure and blood vessel function.
Dosing
Consult a doctor before starting any new supplement regime. The Lupus Foundation of America cites a study in which patients were given 3 grams of fish oil daily for a period of 24 weeks. This study showed that the dose of 3 grams improved the skin and joint pain symptoms in the patients. There was a decrease in inflammation and an improvement in blood platelets.
Safety
High doses of fish oil may increase the risk of bleeding or strokes. The Mayo Clinic warns that large doses may cause gastrointestinal upset including acid reflux, diarrhea, belching and abdominal pain. Though fish oil supplements have been found to contain little or no mercury, pesticides may be present. Look for high-quality supplements from a reputable source and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
Considerations
The Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health reports that there is not enough research to determine whether or not supplements like fish oil will have an effect on the amount of medication that a patient needs to control Lupus flares. There are also not enough findings on whether omega-3 fatty acids will reverse any damage already done by the disease or improve the patient's overall perspective on the diagnosis.
