Chinese Herbs for Lack of Menstrual Bleeding

The lack of menstrual bleeding for three months or more, or amenorrhea, can be cause for concern for many women. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views amenorrhea as a disruption in proper blood circulation, and a poor overall well-being and imbalance in a women's body. Changes in the menstrual cycle are attributed to kidney function, blood circulation and qi (energy flow). The goal for treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine is to restore regulation so that normal menstrual bleeding will resume. The types of Chinese herbs used to treat lack of menstrual bleeding will depend on the individual's symptoms and the cause for imbalance in the body. The following are some common Chinese herbs found in TCM treatment of amenorrhea and also some common Chinese herbal treatments used for lack of menstrual bleeding.

Rhemmania, Chinese Foxglove, Di-Huang

Rhemmania is used to help nourish the kidney and adrenal glands, helping to stimulate hormone production. It is also used to remove heat from the blood and promote the production of body fluids.

Angelica Root, Chinese Angelica, Dong Quai

Angelica root is found in most Chinese herbal treatments for menstrual bleeding, as it helps to enrich and nourish blood. It helps to promote blood circulation.

Chinese Yam, Dioscorea, Shan Yao

Chinese yam is a Chinese herb that helps to nourish the spleen, so that it provides nutrients needed for hormonal regulation. It can also act to stabilize and tone the kidneys.

Szechuan Lovage, Chuan Xiong

Szechuan lovage helps to nourish blood and invigorate qi (energy), promoting its movement within the body.

Restore the Kidneys Pill--Gui Shen Wa

This Chinese herbal treatment consists of rhemmania, eucommia, dodder seed, wolfberry, angelica root, chinese yam and poria; the combination of these herbs function to restore the function of the kidneys and provide nourishment to the kidneys.

Four Herbs Soup with Astralagus and Ginseng

The combination of rhemmania, white peony root, szechuan lovage, angelica root make up the four herbs soup, which is known to help regulate blood. When astralgus and ginseng are added to this, it can help to enrich the blood and promote circulation.

House of Blood Stasis-Expelling Decoction

Peach kernel, safflower, angelica root, red peony root, Szechuan lovage, balloonflower root, torowax root, rhemmania, orange flower, achyranthes root, licorice root make up this Chinese herbal treatment. The purpose of this treatment is to activate the blood that is stagnant and nourish it. It also acts to nourish the liver.
