Positive energy and positive health often go hand in hand. Taking care of yourself emotionally and physically promote positive energy. Similarly, negative factors, such as physical illness, emotional disorders and poor self care, frequently do the opposite. If you experience persistent or severe lack of energy and are clueless as to the cause, seek guidance from your doctor. Though many causes of lack of energy can be addressed through lifestyle changes, numerous others require medical care.
Sleep Problems
Sleep problems, such as sleeping restlessly, sleeping less than your body requires, insomnia and sleep apnea--a common condition that causes blocked airways and difficulty breathing during sleep, frequently result in reduced energy. Though people's specific sleep needs vary, the National Sleep Foundation suggests that most adults aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night and that 4 to 5 hours of sleep nightly increases risk for depression, exhaustion and the inability to concentrate. To improve your sleep habits, do your best to stick to consistent, scheduled sleep and waking times. An hour prior to sleep, make efforts to increase relaxation, by taking a warm bath or reading. Sleep in a comfortable, dark atmosphere, avoid caffeine during late afternoon and evening and stop eating at least 2 hours prior to bedtime. If your sleep difficulties are severe or persistent or if you experience symptoms of sleep apnea, such as severe morning headaches, leg swelling or heartburn, seek guidance from a qualified professional.
Depression
Depression is a psychological disorder characterized by long-term bouts of depressive emotions, such as sadness, loneliness and purposelessness, that interfere with your usual life. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, depression is one of the most common illnesses in America, affecting an estimated 18 million people per year. Lack of energy, excessive sleepiness, desire to sleep for elongated periods of time and physical weakness are common symptoms of the disease. Once the illness is effectively treated, often through individual counseling, alternative therapies, such as art therapy, meditation or massage, and/or medication, symptoms, such as lethargy, often dissipate. If you or a loved one exhibits one or more symptoms of depression, seek guidance from a qualified professional.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, occurs when your thyroid gland doesn't produce appropriate amounts of certain hormones. As a result, sufferers of the condition often experience reduced physical and emotional energy. According to the Mayo Clinic, hypthyroidism most commonly affects middle-aged or older women, though it can develop at any age and in both sexes. Additional symptoms of hypothyroidism may include constipation, puffy face, dry skin, modest weight gain, increased sensitivity to cold, and depression. Once the condition is treated, generally through synthetic thyroid or other medical treatment, a person's energy and overall wellness tend to improve.
