The gallbladder is located under the liver and stores bile, which is used to help digest fats. Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder and block the ducts that carry bile. Eighty percent of gallstones are made up of cholesterol, while the rest are composed of pigment, a waste product of hemoglobin. Individuals with gallstones have several options for treatment including the removal of the gallbladder, but some individuals prefer to try alternative natural remedies to control the symptoms of gallstones. Before using a natural remedy always consult with your doctor. If you have a fever or severe pain persists it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Gallbladder Cleanse

A gallbladder cleanse using apple juice, olive oil, lemon juice and a herbal laxative may help manage gallstones. The day before the cleanse, water and apple juice is consumed throughout the day followed by a laxative and a lemon juice that night. The next day juice and water is consumed followed by olive oil and lemon juice at night. Apple juice acts as a solvent in the bile. The olive oil helps the gallbladder contract properly while the lemon juice helps minimize nausea. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are common side effects.

Diet

A low-fat, high-fiber diet should be followed by individuals with gallstones. Gallstones form when too much fat and cholesterol is contained in bile, when there are not enough bile salts or when the gallbladder doesn't empty as often as it should. Obesity is a risk factor for the development of gallstones and a reduction in weight can help manage gallstones. However, drastic weight loss and crash diets should be avoided as it actually increases the risk of developing gallstones. High cholesterol foods such as meat, whole milk products, eggs and cheese should be replaced with more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies in combination with a proper diet can help with gallstones. It is important to speak with your doctor before using any herbal remedies, especially if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or are taking prescription medications.
Milk thistle and dandelion can help stimulate the gallbladder and bile production. Increased bile production can help flush out a gallstone. Oregon grape increases blood circulation to the liver which stimulates the production of bile. Rosemary stimulates the production of bile and it also eases spasms that can occur in bile ducts and aids in fat digestion.
