Most women desire to lose weight after their pregnancies. Though weight gain during the pregnancy is very normal and healthy, it's not always easy to lose the weight once the baby comes. Some women try diet pills and other unsafe methods of losing weight without any success. There are several simple yet fast and effective methods for losing weight after pregnancy.
Breastfeed
One of the fastest ways to lose weight after pregnancy is by breastfeeding the baby. Not only is breastfeeding healthier for the baby, but it also burns up to 800 extra calories per day, according to Fit Pregnancy magazine. La Leche League International states that women who breastfeed lose an average of 1.3 to 1.6 pounds per month without the addition of dieting or exercising for the first four to six months of the baby's life. Women who fully breastfeed and do not supplement with formula burn more calories than those who choose to use formula, too.
Exercise
One of the best ways to lose pregnancy weight after the baby is born is by exercising. Depending on the type of birth, mothers may have to wait six weeks after the birth before beginning exercise. After that, Fit Pregnancy magazine recommends doing 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise, such as jogging, swimming or cycling, three to five days per week to burn calories and lose fat. Weight training several days a week is another fast way to lose weight, because it speeds up the metabolism long after exercise, states Fit Pregnancy.
Eat Right
A breastfeeding mother needs to make sure to eat enough calories to provide for her baby's needs, which is usually around 1,800 calories a day. Whether a woman is breastfeeding or not, eating healthier foods and less fat in her diet can help her to lose weight quicker. Fit Pregnancy magazine recommends that women who want to lose weight replace processed foods like chips and candy with natural, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grains. They also recommend that women eat lean protein like chicken breasts instead of high-fat meats like steak and choose low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat ones like whole milk.
Sleep More
It's rare to find a new mother who says she feels refreshed and gets plenty of sleep. Yet finding just a little bit more time to nap or sleep can improve and quicken a woman's weight loss efforts. Fit Pregnancy magazine explains that lack of sleep changes blood sugar levels, making women not only hungrier, but causing them to crave sugar and other unhealthy foods. Napping or sleeping a little extra can decrease the body's need to store up extra fat as well, states Fit Pregnancy.
