4 Ways to Prevent Hematuria

1. Avoid Stressful Exercise

One of the common causes of hematuria is trauma to the body, specifically in the region of the bladder or the kidneys. While much of this trauma may be accidental in nature, there are certain steps you can take to protect your body in the vulnerable abdominal and pelvic region. If you are concerned about hematuria, you may wish to abstain from contact sports and from the type of martial arts in which you engage in combat maneuvers. If you must participate in any type of contact event, be sure to wear the proper protective gear designed for that sport. Other types of non-contact sport or activity that may result in trauma to the kidneys or bladder include horseback riding, bicycling and jogging. If you find that your participation in any of these activities is followed by the presence of blood in your urine, you should consult your doctor to see whether there is any special gear or equipment that would allow you to continue this activity, without undergoing further damage to your body, or whether it would be wiser to eliminate the activity altogether.

2. Eliminate Certain Types of Medication

Many medications can cause blood in the urine. If you are taking phenolphthalein, cyclophosphamide, anticoagulants or laxatives, these may well lead to you developing hematuria. There are many other types of prescription and over-the-counter medications, supplements and herbal treatments that may also cause blood hematuria, so if you notice blood in your urine, you need to compile a complete list of any of these you are taking. With this list, your doctor can determine whether the hematuria may be caused by any of these issues and whether your prescription can be changed in order to eliminate your bleeding.

3. Modify Your Diet

A high-protein, low-sodium diet has been proven effective in controlling or eliminating hematuria in many patients. Some patients may require calcium supplementation. If you suffer from benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), there are certain dietary changes you may wish to make in order to control its symptoms, which include hematuria. These changes involve eliminating or reducing intake of cereals, bread, eggs and poultry and increasing consumption of soups, vegetables, peas, beans, lentils and citrus fruits.

4. Undergo Medical Treatment or Surgery As Necessary

A number of medical conditions, if not addressed, may result in hematuria. If you have been diagnosed with kidney or bladder stones, you may need to undergo some type of procedure to remove or break up the stones. Tumors of the ureters, bladders, or kidneys may need treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. If you suffer from kidney disease, you may be a candidate for dialysis or even transplant surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.
