Toprol or Toprol-XL is the brand name for the medication metoprolol. According to Drugs.com, an online drug reference, Toprol is classified as a beta-adrenergic blocking agent or beta-blocker. This type of medication is helpful in treating heart and blood flow problems, such as chest pain or angina, and high blood pressure. Mayo Clinic states Toprol is also used in the prevention of recurring heart attacks and heart failure.

Drugs.com encourages patients to notify a health care provider prior to taking Toprol if any of the following conditions apply: pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland); congestive heart failure; respiratory problems such as asthma; blood flow problems; diabetes; depression; liver, kidney or thyroid problems; low blood pressure; or myasthenia gravis. Toprol can cause drowsiness and impair thinking. Do not stop taking this medication without notifying a health care provider. Discontinuing Toprol abruptly can increase chances of adverse side effects.

Drugs.com states symptoms of Toprol overdose include fainting, irregular heart rhythm, trouble breathing and blue-colored fingertips. If overdose is suspected, emergency medical care should be called immediately.

Side Effects

According to Mayo Clinic, undesirable side effects of Toprol may include vision disturbances, chest discomfort, lightheadedness with position changes, shortness of breath, irregular heart rate, sweating and tiredness. Other less common side effects are bloating, cough, swelling of hands and feet, decrease in urine, trouble breathing, neck vein enlargement, confusion and mood changes.
