The two biggest reasons children participate in sports and exercise are fun and socialization. Yet, the average American child gets less than 15 minutes of exercise per day, according to the University of Michigan's Fitness for Youth Program. Parents should introduce enjoyable activities that can be done at home with other children or parents involved. The Fitness for Youth Program also reported that when children are joined and supported by parents in fitness activities, the children's ability to maintain fitness longevity increases.

Jumping Rope

Jumping rope is a traditional favorite activity for children and can burn calories at a rate of 750 calories per hour, according to the Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion. Children can play jumping games together, using counting rhymes that heighten interest, promote longevity and increase exercise sessions because of their enjoyment.

Jumping Jacks

Jumping jacks require no equipment and can be done anywhere. Children usually find the repetitive jumping movements enjoyable and can use jumping jacks, particularly along with music, to achieve fitness goals. Jumping jacks also challenge stamina and coordination.

Dancing

Whether your child prefers ballet, hip-hop or other styles, dancing encourages children to burn excess calories and enjoy their bodies freely. Some video games challenge kids to move to dance routines while playing the game. This allows children who are drawn to television and video games to learn new moves and increase their fitness levels while remaining indoors.
