Building speed is vital for running backs. Power is a also a major asset, but when the power back has speed, he becomes an especially effective runner. By getting in top condition and doing drills to increase speed, running backs can increase their value to their football team.
High-Knee Rope Ladder
One of the best ways to increase speed is by running the high-knee rope ladder. Picking your knees up high will help you avoid tackles as a football player and give you the balance to come down to the ground on your toes and run explosively. The rope ladder is set up with two columns of six squares that are 12 inches by 12 inches. Pick up your knees as high as possible as you run this drill as quickly as possible. You will develop speed and explosive power.
Chute Running
Sprinting 100 yards with a running chute attached to your back will help you build explosive speed on the football field. The running chute is worn like a back pack and your teammate or coach will make sure it opens as you begin your sprint. The chute will catch the air and provide resistance, making sprinting 100 yards especially taxing. Doing this without the chute will make you a faster runner.
Box Jumps
Doing standing jumps over a 14- to 18-inch box will build leg strength and help increase the explosiveness needed to run faster on the football field. Stand to the left of the box and then jump over it to your right. Jump back over it to your left. Do this 10 times to each side. Then get behind the box and jump over the front of it and then back 10 times each. This will build up your calf muscles and improve your ability to sprint.
