Exercise is important for kids. It helps them stay healthy, prevent obesity and diabetes, and have a more positive outlook on life, according to KidsHealth.org. For adults, exercise may feel like a chore to be completed at the gym, but for kids, exercise involves play. With all their high-tech toys today, children may need an extra push to get out the door. Help your kids get fit with some fun and unique ways for kids to exercise.
Playgrounds and Play Areas
Playgrounds are a classic way to get kids to exercise, and they offer fun tools and equipment for strength training, flexibility and cardio workouts. Kids can run, climb, swing, crawl, jump and play tag at most playgrounds, getting a great workout in the process. If the weather's bad or you can't make it to the park, venture out to one of the many modern indoor playgrounds at malls or play centers nationwide. Establishments such as Monkey Joe's and Chuck E. Cheese's, and outdoor festivals and carnivals offer equipment such as inflatable bouncers, tunnels, climbing walls and a variety of obstacle course challenges that kids can enjoy while improving their fitness.
Swimming
Most kids love going to the pool or, even better, the beach. Sign your child up for swimming lessons, and she'll be in for lots of fun and vigorous cardiovascular and strength workouts. Swimming burns more calories than almost any other aerobic activity, and allows kids to be creative and play games at the same time. Pack up the kids and head to the pool, and your little ones can enjoy playing swim tag, Marco Polo, diving games and floating races in no time. Just be sure the swimming facilities you choose have certified lifeguards on duty and that your children understand the safety rules of the pool or beach.
Active Games
Get your kids whipped into shape by playing classic outdoor games such as tag, hide-and-seek, kickball or dodge ball. If the weather is inclement, stay inside and pop in a kids' fitness video, play leapfrog or have a dance party with your childrens' favorite tunes. Encourage your kids to be creative by pretending to be their favorite animals, and make movements and sounds like the animals. If you have pets, your kids can get a good workout by playing fetch or tag with the family dog or taking him for a walk. Let your imagination run wild to come up with fun ways to keep your kids moving.
