Armpit odor is normal and is caused by bacteria in the armpit when the body sweats. Although the sweat is odorless, you may smell a strong odor when the perspiration comes in contact with the bacteria on your skin. If armpit odor remains a consistent problem, consult a doctor, who may recommend a prescription-strength antiperspirant.

Deodorant

The Mayo Clinic recommends using deodorant to help reduce body odor. Deodorant works by making the surface of skin more acidic. Bacteria is not attracted to acidic skin, so your body odor will disappear until the deodorant wears off. Deodorant doesn't prevent or reduce sweating, and if you sweat more than average, you may need to reapply deodorant more than once a day. Apply deodorant immediately after bathing, and as often as needed throughout the day to prevent body odor.

Antiperspirant

If you sweat through your clothing, Kids Health recommends using an antiperspirant in addition to your deodorant, or a deodorant that contains an antiperspirant. This way, you will not have to reapply deodorant as often, and it will reduce unsightly sweat spots on your clothing. Antiperspirants contain aluminum, which temporarily clogs the sweat gland. Antiperspirants, particularly harsh, prescription-strength products can cause redness, drying and irritation of the skin.

Diet

Armpit odor is triggered by eating certain foods, says the Mayo Clinic. Eating garlic, onions, other foods with strong odors, caffeine or alcohol may cause armpit odor. By eliminating these foods from your diet, you may be able to significantly reduce your body odor.

Cotton Clothing

Clothing that is made of 100 percent cotton or other natural materials allows the skin to breathe. Synthetic fibers like polyester will cling to the skin, which prevents the sweat on your body from evaporating. To help ventilate the area under your arms, wear loose-fitting clothing made out of natural fibers like 100 percent cotton. Wearing natural materials will help prevent excessive sweating and body odor.
