Damaged hair is characterized by breakage and split ends. It is also often dry and difficult to manage. Hair can become damaged by dry air, chemical treatments and heated hair appliances that damage the hair cuticle. Olive oil is a natural moisturizer that can nourish hair and improve its strength by reducing breakage and healing split ends. It also seals the hair's outer layer from further damage.
Olive Oil
Stimulate hair follicles with an olive oil massage. Using your fingertips, rub olive oil into the scalp to stimulate blood flow and encourage hair growth. Cover your hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes to allow the olive oil to soak into your hair after a scalp massage. This increases the moisturizing benefits. Combing a teaspoon of olive oil through hair on hot and humid days provides moisture and improves the appearance of frizzy and frazzled hair.
Olive Oil and Essential Oil
Olive oil helps to treat damaged hair when combined with essential oils such as lavender, frankincense or rose geranium. Shake 1/2 cup of olive oil with five drops of essential oil in a jar and let it sit for 24 hours so the oils thoroughly combine. After rinsing your hair with warm water, massage a tablespoon of the oil treatment into hair, starting at the scalp and working all the way to the ends. A plastic shower cap placed over hair for 30 minutes allows the oils to seep into the hair, repairing damage and split ends. Rinse the oils out and then shampoo as usual.
Olive Oil and Egg Yolk
When olive oil is combined with egg yolk, another natural moisturizer, it works to provide a deep treatment for hair that restores the hair cuticle and reduces damage. Combine one egg yolk with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and 3/4 cup of warm water and apply to damp hair. Rinse after 10 minutes.
