If you have decided to grow out your facial hair, you may be eager to get it to the desired length as quickly as possible. The in-between phases of facial hair growth can cause your skin to feel irritated and itchy. Try not to scratch the area while growing out facial hair since this can increase your chance of developing a rash or infection. Continue to moisturize the area with a soothing aftershave lotion to ease irritation while growing out facial hair.

Step 1

Eat a well-balanced diet. If you are trying to grow hair anywhere on the body, you need to follow a healthy eating plan that includes foods high in iron, protein, B vitamins, vitamin A and vitamin C. Foods to eat are fish, beans, milk, poultry, tofu, citrus fruits, carrots and green leafy vegetables.

Step 2

Trim the facial hair. Although it sounds counterintuitive, trimming the beard can get rid of any damaged and split ends. Limit trimming to once a week until you reach your desired length. Use a trimmer with a sharp blade for hair removal.

Step 3

Cleanse the facial hair daily. Massage a pea-size amount of mild soap into the mustache or beard. Cleansing can keep the area free of bacteria, and massaging can improve blood flow to the area. Rinse away any soap residue with lukewarm water.

Step 4

Apply a small amount of minoxidil-based treatment solution to the facial hair area. Apply it twice a day after the skin has been cleaned and dried. Minoxidil is available over the counter and is marketed to treat thinning hair. Limit application to the area where you want to grow the facial hair. The product may cause skin irritation and swelling.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep in mind that minoxidil topical solution is not marketed for facial hair growth and should only be used after getting approval from your doctor.
