Burning more calories than you consume is the only way to lose weight, and can be relatively easy. Teens should not go on strict diets or try to regulate their calories as long as they are not overeating. Therefore, the easiest way for a teen to lose weight is through increased physical activity and eating sensibly. Because teens are still growing and developing, weight loss is only necessary for a teenager if she is overweight or obese. It is important to consider that teenagers' bodies go through growth spurts and body shape changes during puberty.
Step 1
Visit a pediatrician. The doctor can evaluate a teen's weight compared with her height, body composition, activity level, eating habits, age and gender to determine if she is actually overweight. He can also explain how much weight should be lost, and rule out any other issues causing excess fat accumulation.
Step 2
Provide healthy food choices. Buy mostly fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains. Limit the amount of junk food available at home, and swap what is available for healthier choices (for example, choose air-popped popcorn instead of potato chips). Parents should model healthy eating habits for their children.
Step 3
Sign up for a sport or activity. Soccer, baseball, swimming, cheerleading, football or any activity that involves movement can help a teen get the exercise she needs. Family trips and activities such as ice skating or nature hikes are other options.
Step 4
Limit television and computer time. It is easy to spend hours at a time engrossed in a television series or surfing the internet while munching on snacks and not getting any physical activity. Allow no more than an hour or so of time on the television or computer (unless it is for homework) daily, and fill up the extra time tossing around a baseball or bike riding.
