The first trimester of pregnancy brings many new signs and symptoms. Sometimes waiting for a missed period may feel like an eternity. Many symptoms can appear as early as one to two weeks after conception. Not all women will experience the same signs and symptoms during pregnancy. Symptoms may also vary from those of a subsequent pregnancy.
Implantation Bleeding and Mild Cramping
Implantation bleeding can be one of the earliest pregnancy symptoms, reports the American Pregnancy Association. At around one to two weeks following conception, the embryo begins to attach to the uterine wall. During this time you may experience light spotting or bleeding with mild uterine cramping. Implantation bleeding should be lighter in color and flow than a normal menstrual period. Uterine cramping may persist throughout the first trimester as your uterus stretches to accommodate your baby. Any bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your health care provider.
Nausea and Vomiting
A classic symptom of pregnancy is nausea and vomiting which is sometimes referred to as morning sickness. Despite its name, morning sickness may occur at any time throughout the day. Nausea seems to stem at least in part from rapidly rising levels of estrogen, which causes the stomach to empty more slowly, states Mayo Clinic. A sensitivity to odors and food aversions may occur during this time. Many women will experience relief from nausea and vomiting once they enter the second trimester around week 13. Some women may experience morning sickness throughout their entire pregnancy. Severe vomiting may cause dehydration and should be reported to your obstetrician.
Breast Pain and Tenderness
Swollen or tender breasts is a pregnancy symptom which may begin as early as one to two weeks after conception, reports the American Pregnancy Association. Your breasts may be tender to the touch, swollen and heavier than normal. Breast changes occur in early pregnancy due to the rise of estrogen and progesterone. You may also notice that your areola---the darkened area surrounding nipple---seems larger in size and darker in color. A warm compress may help alleviate breast pain and tenderness.
