Among the most trusted herbs used to promote and increase blood circulation, ginger root, salvia or sage leaf and gingko biloba leaf top the list. Herbal remedies have little or no side effects and are inexpensive to acquire compared to their prescription counterparts. The University of Texas at El Paso's Herbal Safety program reports that medicinal herbs can be an effective treatment option when used properly under the guidance of a professional.

Salvia/Sage

Salviae Miltiorrhziae Radix is the scientific identification for the herb salvia. Salvia is widely used in Chinese herbal medicine where it is referred to as Dan Shen. Chinese medicinal uses for this herb include increasing blood circulation, dissolving blood clots, nourishing the blood and calming the spirit. Salvia is one of the chief ingredients in Chinese medicinal compound formulated to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and occlusive cerebrovascular disease.

Ginger

Scientifically known as, zingiber officinale, ginger can be used as a boiled root to make tea, powdered and encapsulated or in liquid extractions. Believed to improve blood circulation, it is generally safe when ingested at up to 4 g per day. Fresh root may be more potent and effective than dried or powdered form. When taking ginger, remember that it's properties may interfere with normal blood clotting. Therefore, this herb should not be used within one week of surgical procedures.

Gingko biloba

Experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center confirm that Gingko biloba is a traditional medicine shown effective to treat circulatory disorders. Lab studies have shown that the herb improves blood circulation by dilating blood vessels and "reducing the stickiness of blood platelets". Gingko biloba can be found in capsule, tablet, liquid extract or dried leaf forms. It is generally not used in children.
