Neutrogena has many products designed for women, men and teens. They have an active anti-acne line, anti-aging line, and a sunblock line. For Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion it has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 60 and works to help protect the skin from the sun's effects.
Active Ingredient
Titanium Dioxide in a 9.1 percent concentration functions as the active ingredient in Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion. It works as a thickener, a sunscreen and a lubricator. The Cosmetics Cop lists it as a skin protector from the UV rays of the sun without irritation.
Thickeners
Thickeners in this sunblock include C12 15 alkyl benzoate, carbomer and cetearyl alcohol. Thickeners bulk up a mixture and can make it creamy. Cetearyl alcohol also can function as an emollient as well as C12 15 alkyl benzoate.
Emollients
Emollients make skin softer and appear smooth, lessening the visibility of fine lines. In the sensitive skin sunblock formula there is stearic acid, trimethylolpropane triethylhexanoate, neopentyl glycol dioctanoate and isopropyl c12 15 pareth 9 carboxylate that work like emollients. Isopropyl c12 15 pareth 9 carboxylate and trimethylolpropane triethylhexanoate are also skin conditioners that improve the moisture levels of the skin and keep it from peeling.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants help fight free radical damage on the skin. Free radical damage occurs when oxygen leaves byproducts as it does normal cellular metabolism. Antioxidants in this formula include BHT (or butylated hydroxytoluene), Green tea leaf extract and tocopherol (or vitamin E). Cosmetic Cop lists BHT as a potent synthetic antioxidant, and tocopherol as vitamin E, as an excellent topical skin antioxidant.
Preservatives
Preservatives work to keep a formula from spoiling. If not added, fungi, bacteria and mold can all grow. Butylparaben, methylparaben, isopropylparaben and isobutylparaben are all in this sunblock and are "the parabens." Another preservative, phenoxyethanol, is included. All preservatives in this sunblock are less irritating and gentle to skin.
Surfactants
Surfactants decrease surface tension and allow a product to glide easily over the skin. Surfactants included in this sunblock are steareth 21 and potassium cetyl phosphate. Potassium cetyl phosphate can also be a cleansing agent for the skin.
Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers, according to Derma Doctor, blend water and oil together allowing it to mix properly for use. Emulsifiers in Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock are steareth 2 and neopentyl glycol diisostearate. Neopentyl glycol diisostearate also conditions skin.
Vitamin B5
Both panthenol and calcium pantothenate are among the ingredients. Both are a form of vitamin B5. They hydrate the skin and keep it moisturized, working well with hydrators and emollients.
Stabilizers
Stabilizers are those agents that prevent texture and consistency changes from elements in the compound binding together. Both iron hydroxide and disodium EDTA are in this sunblock and work as stabilizers.
Miscellaneous
Five remaining ingredients all do various functions. Acrylates C10 30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer is a film-forming agent that makes for continuous coverage of the sunblock. Aluminum hydroxide is a skin protectant and an absorber. Butylene glycol is a solvent that dissolves other products in the mixture to work effectively. Glycerin is a hydrator that keeps moisture in the skin. Lastly, triethanolamine is a pH balancer that works to keep the mixture from getting too acidic or alkaline.
