If you have allergies, you may not want to rely on medications to treat the condition. Decongestants, antihistamines and corticosteroids can treat allergy symptoms but also can cause unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness, headaches and skin sensitivity. With your doctor's approval, you can treat allergies naturally. In most cases, making some simple lifestyle changes to avoid common allergens will prevent symptoms and allow you to forgo the use of medications.

Step 1

Keep windows closed, and steer clear of damp areas, such as basements. Wear dust masks while working outdoors.

Step 2

Rinse your sinuses with saline. To do this, fill a bulb syringe with saline solution, then place the syringe inside a nostril. Empty the contents of the syringe to get rid of any mucus caused by allergies.

Step 3

Remove allergens from carpets by vacuuming on a regular basis. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air filter (known as a HEPA filter). If possible, carpets should be removed and replaced with wood or laminate flooring.

Step 4

Clean your house on a regular basis to prevent dust and dirt buildup. The Teens Health website, sponsored by the Nemours Foundation, recommends protecting mattresses and pillows with special covers to avoid dust mites.

Step 5

Read food labels. If you have a food allergy, avoidance is the only way to treat it.
