Finding an effective acne treatment is a challenge for most acne sufferers. After finding a solution to acne itself, scars and discoloration are often left behind. The good news is that there are many treatments available for acne scarring. If you have found an effective acne treatment and are now faced with scarring, speak to your dermatologist about developing a comprehensive treatment program. These are some of the more commonly used treatments for acne scars.

Skin Lighteners

Dark spots, or hyperpigmentation, are often left behind after acne clears. Luckily, these areas of discoloration are not permanent and do not technically fall under the category of scarring.
If you primarily have skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation, your dermatologist may recommend a skin lightening cream containing hydroquinone to reduce the discoloration. Hydroquinone may cause sun sensitivity, so adequate sun protection is recommended.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is effective at reducing depressed or sunken scars as well as skin discoloration. According to the Mayo Clinic, laser resurfacing removes the top layer of skin and promotes new skin growth from underneath. The new skin that grows is smoother with a reduction in scarring.
After laser skin resurfacing, antibiotics and dressings are used to prevent infection and promote effective healing. Downtime may last up to two weeks.

Punch Surgery

Deep scars may be removed with acne scar surgery. This is often used along with laser resurfacing for maximal effect. A small instrument, similar to a cookie cutter, is used to remove the scar itself. The doctor then either places a small incision or raises the scar tissue to the level of the skin and sews it back into place.
Both techniques leave a less noticeable scar. Your dermatologist may opt to sew a graft into place instead, using a bit of your own skin that has been harvested to fill in the wound and create an even surface.

Subcutaneous Incision

A subcutaneous incision is another procedure that your dermatologist may perform to reduce the appearance of sunken scars. A small, needle-like instrument is used to get under the skin and separate it from the scar tissue underneath.
Without the scar tissue pulling the skin downward, it is smoother and the scar is reduced.

Fillers

Fillers are effective at treating individual depressed scars. Very little downtime is involved in fillers, with most patients being able to return to normal activity immediately.
Collagen or a collagen-like substance is injected directly into the scar to raise it to the level of the surrounding skin. Results are noticed immediately after treatment. However, fillers are a temporary form of treatment and repeated treatments are typically necessary.
