A massage for your man can relax him and bring you closer together, but don't expect the same tricks that work on relaxing a woman work for a man. While women rely on candles, scents and oils, those same things may make your man feel uncomfortable and ill at ease. Instead of trying to make him conform to your idea of a great massage, keep his tastes in mind as you set up an environment of relaxation and focus on those areas of the body where men hold their stress.

Set the Mood

Instead of relying on the ocean sounds and candles you might use for relaxation, consider the things that relax your man. Perhaps simply dimming the lights is a better alternative to candles; a ball game on the radio may be as relaxing to him as piano music is to you. Ask him beforehand what thing he'd like in the area where you'll be giving the massage. If you don't have a massage table, a bed with cushions can be as effective, and possibly even more relaxing due to its familiarity.

Mix the Oil

Essential oils mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond can help your man relax and feel rejuvenated or happy, depending on the type of oils you use. Choose essential oils such as sandalwood for relaxation and lowered stress levels, neroli to promote happiness over depression and davana for reduced anxiety. Avoid flowery scents. Choose your oil and mix two or three drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil.

Start at the Top

A scalp massage is an ideal way to begin your man's massage. The stress from work, commuting and family life can leave him feeling weary and prone to headaches. Start by raking your fingers through the scalp, making sure to not press too hard. Next, brace your fingers at the back of his scalp and move your fingertips in circular motions around the temples to relieve pressure.

Relax the Back

Tackle the large surface of your man's back after the scalp massage. If he works in a physical trade where he is constantly using his body as a tool, chances are that his back is his main support system and is likely tired and sore at the end of the day. Warm some oil between your hands by rubbing them together, and then begin rubbing your hands over his bare back in circular motions. Knead the skin with your fists, asking him whether he wants more or less pressure, and concentrate on the neck and shoulder area. Use the base of your hand for firm pressure. Take your time and spend at least 5 to 10 minutes on each area of his body.

End With the Feet

The feet can be the last stop on your man's massage. His feet take a beating each day, especially if he works a job that requires him to be on his feet or wears improper footwear. A good foot massage can go a long way toward relaxing him. Start by warming some oil between your hands and then placing one palm on the sole of his foot so that he can feel the warmth of your body. Slide your hands up the foot. It's a good idea to knead in between each toe separately and to pull them a little to release any tension in the toes. Finish the massage by kneading the heel area.
