Hirsutism, a condition that causes excess body hair growth, affects as many as 10 percent of women, estimates the Mayo Clinic. Unwanted body hair can make you feel embarrassed and unattractive. Whether you have excess hair on your arms and legs, face, chest and back or want to remove hair from the pubic region, each area of your body requires different hair removal methods and techniques to get the best possible results. Make sure that you follow safety precautions so that your hair removal session doesn't become necessarily painful to reveal smoother, hair-free skin.

Face

When it comes to your face, precise hair removal methods that last longer are ideal. While most men shave their faces, women may find that this leaves behind unsightly stubble. For longer-lasting hair removal, choose a method that removes hair from the root, rather than at the surface like shaving. Waxing is especially effective for the face and can be done at home with a waxing kit or in a salon. If waxing your face at home, make sure to place a warm compress over the hairs to soften them before you begin waxing.

Legs and Arms

Since legs and arms are such large areas of skin, less painful methods are usually employed to keep them smooth and hair-free. Shaving can keep your legs smooth, and it is easily done in the shower every few days. If you choose shaving to remove the hair from your arms and legs, remember to use a good-quality shave gel to keep the skin hydrated, or risk razor burn. KidsHealth.org, a division of the Nemours Foundation, recommends shaving in the same direction of the hair growth if you are prone to ingrown hairs.

Pubic Hair

Men and women alike are known to groom their pubic hair. While some like a completely bare look, others simply prefer to trim and clean the edges. No matter which approach you take to pubic hair removal, depilatory creams can be a pain-free option for the sensitive skin found there. When applying depilatory creams to the pubic area, choose a depilatory specifically formulated for that application, warns Columbia University health professionals through the school's "Go Ask Alice!" health question-and-answer site. Trim the hair down to a quarter of an inch with scissors, and then apply the depilatory, following the package directions exactly for the best results.

Chest and Back

Shaving usually isn't a good choice for removing the hair on your chest and back. The irritation from wearing clothes and the itchiness of regrowth can be problematic. Waxing is a better choice for the chest and back, especially when done by a professional. Removing chest hair can make your muscles look more apparent, notes AskMen.com.
