Sweat glands, of which there are both eccrine and aprocrine glands, are located in various parts of the body such as under the arms and around the genital area. As the glands secrete sweat and toxins, bacteria in these locations can accumulate and produce body odor. Most body odor has an unpleasant smell and you can take precautions to prevent it or remedy the problem once it occurs.
Avoid Certain Foods
People who eat excessive onions, garlic and certain spices not only have halitosis but their sweat may have an unpleasant smell. The Mayo Clinic suggests that if you have a problem with excessive body odor and sweat you should eliminate foods with strong odors. Onion, garlic and cumin are good culprits so eliminate them or reduce your intake. Changing your diet by cutting out processed foods and fast foods can also help curb body odor.
Maintain Personal Hygiene
Most people shower once or more daily. Showering helps to wash away accumulated sweat on the body and remove dirt and dead skin. Don't rush through a shower and wash your body properly, especially areas that are more prone to odor. Apply deodorant daily after showering and use a fragrance free soap and shampoo if you are prone to odor in the genital or scalp area. Mothernature.com suggests using antibacterial soaps that help kill bacteria and wash away odor. Some people react to ingredients and fragrances in commercial products and actually may produce an odor from using them.
Stay Fresh On the Go
There are times when everyone is away from the convenience of a shower and needs to freshen up. After a morning run or a busy afternoon at the office, there may not be extra time to hit the showers before going on to the next part of your busy day. Personal wipes or baby wipes can be used to wipe away stale sweat and other body odors. Carry wipes in a purse or glove box of a car. Body fresheners and sprays can also curb body odor. Bring along an extra pair of socks and a breathable change of clothes in case you get overly sweaty. Natural fiber clothing helps skin breathe and combats body odors. If your deodorant or antiperspirant fades quickly, pack a trial size stick or spray with you to reapply if you begin to feel odor creeping up.
