Using Colon Cleansers

Colon cleansing is not for everybody. In fact, the Mayo Clinic points out that in most cases, cleansing your colon is unnecessary and can sometimes be harmful. If you decide to try colon cleansing anyway, it's important that you talk to your health provider first, especially if you suffer from a medical condition or are taking prescription drugs, which might not be completely absorbed if you're taking colon cleansers.

Step 1

Choose your preferred cleansing method. If you want to do the procedure quickly, consider a colonic, which is done at a professional's office and requires only one visit. If you want to try a colon cleanse at home, you need to choose between teas, powders or pills. Pills and powders tend to be stronger but easier to take than teas. You can also use Psyllium Husk (fiber supplement) or activated charcoal.

Step 2

Take the cleansing product at the recommended dosage (depending on brand and type of product) every day until your fecal matter changes to a light color. This usually indicates that all matter accumulated in your intestines has been expulsed.

Step 3

Mix one tablespoon of bentonite clay (in liquid or powder form) and one tablespoon of ground flaxseeds to make your own colon cleanser. Add to a glass of water and mix until the powders have completely dissolved. Drink every morning at least half an hour before breakfast.

Step 4

Arrange to do the colon cleansing at a time when you'll be home for at least 24 hours. If possible, do it over a weekend. Possible side effects of a colon cleanse include diarrhea, cramps and dizziness, so staying at home for the duration of the cleansing is strongly recommended.

Step 5

Eats lots of fruits and vegetables and drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Avoid highly processed carbs, fried foods and sodas or alcohol during the cleanse.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 tablespoon bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds
  • Colon cleanser of your choice
