Heartburn occurs when excess harsh digestive juices irritate the esophageal lining. Rapidly escalating hormone levels in pregnancy slow down the digestive process, making pregnant women more susceptible to heartburn. Later in pregnancy, the problem is often compounded by the extra weight of the baby pressing on the mother's stomach and esophagus. Home remedies can be helpful in the treatment of heartburn in pregnancy.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a highly effective way to treat heartburn in pregnancy, according to Baby CentreUK, a medically reviewed information site. A licensed acupuncturist inserts needles into the pericardium 6 point (P6), which is located between the tendons on the inside of the wrist, about three finger-widths below the hand. A similar effect may be achieved at home with acupressure, or light pressure applied to the point with fingers.

Supplements

Certain supplements may also relieve heartburn symptoms in pregnant women, according to the online magazine "Natural Solutions: Vibrant Health, Balanced Living." Papaya enzyme is a natural alternative to antacids. Probiotics also help breakdown excess stomach acid. Some women also find relief from taking calcium and magnesium supplements, both of which neutralize stomach acids that get backed up in the esophagus. Discuss these remedies with a doctor or midwife before use.

Dietary Modification

To lessen symptoms of heartburn, pregnant women should avoid acidic foods such as dairy, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, peppers and citrus. Foods that weaken the muscle at the base of the esophagus such as garlic, onions and peppermint should also be avoided. Fat and additives make foods more difficult to digest, so keep meals confined to whole grains, legumes, lean meats, vegetables and fruits. Chewing gum may also offer some relief, as the increased saliva aids digestion.

Walk

Many pregnant women find their heartburn gets worse when they lie down. That is because gravity is no longer working with them to keep the stomach acids out of the esophagus. If heartburn strikes, it is best to remain vertical. A leisurely walk aids digestion and moves any excess stomach acid through the system so it does not back up into the esophagus.
