According to Children's Health Watch, the lack of adequate insurance coverage for a child can detrimentally affect the entire family. Children may be at risk for severe illness requiring hospitalization or developmental delays if they do not receive regular check-ups and medical treatment. The family may be spending money that was intended for food and other necessities on expensive medical care, leaving them hungry or without needed items. Mothers whose children are uninsured may be more likely to be depressed. Low-income families in every state may be eligible for federally subsidized free or low-cost health insurance for their children.

Step 1

Assemble your family's income documentation, including pay stubs and yearly tax forms. This information is necessary to determine if you are eligible for free or reduced-fee health insurance for your children.

Step 2

Call the federal Insure Kids Now program, which insures children in all 50 states. The toll-free number for the program is 1-877-543-7669. Your call will be answered by someone who can help you in your state. Request an application.

Step 3

Submit your income and employment documentation to your state's Insure Kids Now branch, along with your completed application. Be sure to comply with all requests for further information in a timely manner.

Step 4

Call a health insurance agent to look into a private individual or family plan if you are ineligible for Insure Kids Now. If necessary, choose a plan with a high deductible. According to Bankrate, these plans have lower premiums, but will cost you more out-of-pocket if your child needs expensive care. Also look into plans that cost a bit more money each month, but may provide more coverage for routine doctor's visits as well as emergency care.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose a doctor who participates in your child's health care plan if possible. This will reduce or eliminate your out-of-pocket expense.
