The Master Cleanse, also known as the lemonade diet or the lemon cleanse, is a detoxification diet that includes drinking a mixture of lemon juice, water and maple syrup. The Master Cleanse was created by Stanley Burroughs, who was not a doctor. Burroughs was charged with involuntary manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license when a patient died while following the Master Cleanse diet. Use the Master Cleanse only under the close supervision of a doctor.
Step 1
Acclimate your body to the diet. Three days before starting the Master Cleanse, eat only fresh fruits and vegetables, suggests Burroughs in his book "The Master Cleanser." Two days before starting the diet, eat nothing but broths and fruit and vegetable juices. The day before starting the Master Cleanse, drink only orange juice.
Step 2
Make the lemonade, which you will prepare and drink every time you feel hungry throughout the duration of the diet. Mix 2 tbsp. of lemon juice, 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper, 2 tbsp. of maple syrup and 8 oz. of water in a tall glass.
Step 3
Drink the lemonade mixture for as long as you feel comfortable. Some people use the diet for a few days, but others follow it for as long as two weeks, according to the Every Diet website.
Step 4
Drink laxative tea once a day if desired, recommends Burroughs.
Step 5
Ease out of the diet by drinking nothing but orange juice the day after the diet, eating only broth and fruit and vegetable juices the second day after the diet and only fruits and vegetables the third day after the diet.
