Fibromyalgia Diet & Exercise

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain in various parts of the body. It affects about 2 percent of the U.S population, according to the Mayo Clinic, and is more common in women than in men. There is no specific blood test or other medical test used to diagnose fibromyalgia and it has no cure. In fact, it can be a very confusing and frustrating disease because some do not believe it is real. While many fibromyalgia patients take strong medications to relieve pain, eating the right foods and exercising can also help to improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Symptoms

The Mayo Clinic states that common symptoms of fibromyalgia include widespread pain particularly at the body's tender points, extreme fatigue, trouble sleeping and additional medical problems such as arthritis, depression and endometriosis. Most of these symptoms can be relieved through diet and exercise.

Foods to Eat

Eating specific, healthful foods can decrease inflammation and pain levels in the body for those who have fibromyalgia. Eating a diet rich in natural foods such as fruits and vegetables can decrease symptoms associated with the condition, the National Fibromyalgia Association explains. The association also states that the more raw fruits and vegetables a person includes in her diet, the better her immune system will function, helping the body to heal itself and preventing other sicknesses. Natural foods with protein such as chicken and turkey also help people with fibromyalgia, as these foods help to balance out blood sugar levels.

Foods to Avoid

The National Fibromyalgia Association states that certain foods can actually cause more pain and inflammation in the body and should be avoided. Fried foods, red meat, foods with white flour and foods high in sugar can all worsen pain, the association says. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and soda can cause pain as well as fatigue.

Food Additives

Many people with fibromyalgia find food additives such as MSG, preservatives and artificial sweeteners to be problematic. The National Fibromyalgia Association states that these additives can worsen a fibromyalgia patient's pain and cause headaches. Those who have the disorder should look for natural foods with as few additives as possible.

Exercise Routine

Even though people with fibromyalgia have pain and are often tired, it is important for them to exercise. The Fibromyalgia Network states that moderate exercise such as walking, swimming and yoga can actually relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain and depression. This is because exercise increases blood and oxygen circulation throughout the body. People with fibromyalgia should not overexert themselves, however, or exercise could make them feel worse.
