Diseases of the skeletal system can cause joint pain, bone weakness and a variety of conditions that can make everyday movement and activity difficult. The skeletal system is made up of bones and cartilage, which can all suffer from a variety of disorders such as osteoporosis, bursitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone that results in increasingly weakened and fragile bones. Osteoporosis may be prevented by exercise and proper diet. According to a figure reported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, it is estimated that in the United States, around 10 million people have osteoporosis as of 2010 and about 34 million more individuals have low bone density, which places them at increased risk for developing this disease and experiencing a fracture.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease of the skeletal system that involves pain and discomfort in the joints due to inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when your body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissue. Over time, this can lead to symptoms of swollen or stiff joints in the wrist, fingers, shoulders, hips, knees and toes. Regarding treatment, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that rheumatoid arthritis generally calls for lifelong treatment. Treatment may include taking medications, participating in physical therapy, exercise and possibly surgery. For early cases, aggressive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis may impede joint damage.

Bursitis

Bursitis is a skeletal disorder that is characterized by inflammation of the bursae, or pads, that are located between bones and tendons. Symptoms of bursitis include achy or stiff joints, pain with pressure on the affected area and a visibly swollen or reddish appearance. Areas commonly affected with bursitis include shoulders, elbows and hips, according to an article on bursitis by the Mayo Clinic. Bursitis is typically caused by repetitive motions. Those at risk for developing bursitis include people who participate in certain sports such as ice skating and cycling. The best treatment for bursitis includes resting, immobilizing the affected area, applying ice to reduce any swelling and taking pain relievers.

Spondylitis

Spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the skeletal system that mostly causes discomfort and inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae in your spine and the joints between your spine and pelvis. According to an article on spondylitis by the University of Maryland Medical Center, the cause of spondylitis is unknown, but genetics may play a significant role. The condition is most often seen in people between the ages 20 and 40, but it can begin as early as age 10. Spondylitis affects more males than females. Treatment may include a combination of medication, physical therapy or surgery.
