Finasteride is used to treat both male pattern baldness (alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia. The medication stops the body from turning testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). In treating benign prostatic hyperplasia, finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which causes the prostate to grow.
Finasteride has been shown to stimulate hair growth in some men. If hair growth is going to occur, it usually appears within the first few months of use. The new hair growth will dissipate if use of finasteride is stopped for any length of time. Because finasteride works with the levels of the male hormone testosterone, women and children should never use this medication.

Mild or Less Noticable Side Effects

Finasteride has side effects ranging from mild to severe. Milder side effects include but are not limited to abdominal and back pain, and diarrhea. Impotence, decreased libido (sex drive) or a decrease in ejaculate or semen may also be a possibility. The decrease in semen should not affect your performance sexually or your ability to reach orgasm.

Moderate Side Effects

Moderate side effects of finasteride are dizziness, weakness, headache and lightheadedness. Feeling like you are going to faint is also possible. Testicular pain may occur as well. These side effects may begin as mild and progress to moderate, while some men may not experience them at all.

Severe Side Effects

Finasteride is used to control hormone levels in the body. This may cause severe side effects in other areas of the reproductive system. Breasts may become larger and more tender than normal. If lumps are found in the breast area or the nipples begin to have a discharge, see a physician as soon as possible.
If finasteride causes a skin rash, or swelling in the lips, tongue or throat, these may be signs of an anaphylactic reaction. Seek medical help immediately.
