Body sculpting is a term used to describe the creation of an improved appearance of muscle tone in the human physique. Many people, including regular exercisers, struggle to create a more "toned up" appearance. The fact is that there are no magic tricks to obtaining a more sculpted look. An exercise program that utilizes a combined approach with strength training, fat loss techniques and a healthy diet is the only way to transform the body naturally.

Strength Train for Improved Muscle Tone

Muscles must be worked to a point where they become fatigued in order for them to grow. This means that the amount of resistance placed on the muscle must be greater than normal to induce a state of failure, where the muscle becomes overloaded and can no longer work as effectively. The heavier the weight, the more quickly the point of fatigue can be reached. During strength training, muscle fibers are systematically broken down with each repetition of an exercise. In the recovery period that follows, these muscle fibers repair themselves and thicken, which is what causes muscles to grow. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends, "eight to 10 strength training exercises, eight to 12 repetitions twice per week." For those looking to improve muscle tone, strength training regularly is important to help muscles grow and achieve a more sculpted appearance.

Shed Unwanted Fat

Although strength training helps muscles grow, if they are covered by unwanted fat, the hard work won't show through. Losing extra fat is an integral part of making muscle tone visible. The only way to lose fat is to create a caloric deficit. This can be achieved by increasing the amount of daily activity, by limiting the amount of calories consumed, or through a combined approach of increased activity and calorie restriction. In addition, losing fat will lower the overall percentage of body fat and improve the body's overall composition. As body fat percentage decreases the metabolism becomes more efficient. Because muscle requires more energy (calories) than fat to sustain, the body begins burning calories at a faster rate each day. Losing fat and building muscle will promote an increased metabolism and the ability to create and maintain a sculpted appearance.

Drink Water and Eat Clean

A study on the effect of drinking water on metabolism in the "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism" found, "Drinking 500 ml of water increased metabolic rate by 30 percent." Drinking water helps to promote a faster metabolism, which is the driving force behind body sculpting. Exercise is always most effective when coupled with a healthy diet composed of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Drinking plenty of water and choosing healthy, unprocessed, whole foods as part of a healthy diet is the safest and healthiest way to lose unwanted fat and build lean muscle for a sculpted physique.
