Once you have mastered getting plenty of air under your skateboard with an ollie, you can think about trying a grind. In a grind, you bring your board above the level of a rail, then ride along the rail with either the bottom or the trucks of your board. Balance is key in executing a proper grind. As you practice, you will more easily find your center of gravity and be able to balance through the entire grind. The Frontside 50/50 is one of the easiest grinds to start with.
Step 1
Select a solid rail to practice on that is not too high, with a smooth, long and flat approach area.
Step 2
Position your front foot just behind the front bolts on the board. Place your back foot on the tail of the board. Approach the rail from your facing side.
Step 3
Start rolling toward the rail slightly off to one side of the rail line. Roll up to the side of the rail, then pop your skateboard into an ollie. Ollie only high enough so that your wheels just clear the rail.
Step 4
Position the board so that the middle of the trucks land on the rail between the wheels. Bend your knees, balance yourself and stand up as the trucks slide along the rail. Keep the board flat to the rail as it grinds to keep the board from slipping off the rail.
Step 5
Lift your front wheel as you approach the end of the grind. Keep the board flat and drop off the rail to land on the ground and roll off.
