Cellulite occurs when connective tissue stretches over fat and muscle in the body. The connective tissue is honeycomb-shaped, which creates a cottage cheese-like consistency under the skin. Cellulite can form anywhere on the body, but is most common on the buttocks, hips and thighs of women, says the Mayo Clinic.
Weight Loss
Everyone has cellulite, but not all cellulite is visible. Individuals with less body fat will not have cellulite that is as noticeable as a person with a high percentage of body fat. Lose weight by eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains in moderation throughout the day. Combine this diet with regular exercise, once a day if possible. Losing weight and toning muscle will help reduce the appearance of cellulite, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Laser Treatment
Laser treatment is an effective way to eliminate cellulite that does not respond to diet and exercise, says the Mayo Clinic. A cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist may perform laser treatment. Laser treatment can be drastically effective, but must be administered twice a week for several weeks in order to be effective. After the laser treatments are complete, results last approximately six months. The procedure involves a diode laser light on the skin in combination with a negative tissue massage to break up lumps of fat underneath the skin.
Radiofrequency Systems
Radiofrequency systems are performed by a cosmetic surgeon or a dermatologist and are effective in reducing cellulite, says the Mayo Clinic. Radiofrequency systems, such as laser treatments, involve twice-weekly sessions and include negative tissue massages. Radiofrequency systems include an infrared light that is shined on the skin. It may require more than one treatment to reduce cellulite completely. Once cellulite is gone, the results will last about six months.
