5 Ways to Treat Headache Associated With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
1. Treat CFS Headaches With Medication
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen can treat headaches, fever and overall pain caused by chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). NSAIDs can sometimes upset your stomach, so use them with caution. If you are taking other medications, including some antidepressants, it may not be safe for you to treat your headaches with ibuprofen, so check with your doctor for alternative drugs.
2. Drink Plenty of Fluids
If you suffer from the fatigue and malaise that are main symptoms of CFS, it may be difficult for you to think about cooking regular meals or even getting up to get yourself a drink at times. It is important to drink enough water and other fluids so you don't become dehydrated, which can increase the frequency and intensity of your headaches. If you are in a period of "bad days" and spend a lot of time in bed, keep a large pitcher of ice water on your bedside table. You will be more likely to drink your recommended 64 oz. daily if the water is at your fingertips.
3. Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough rest each night can help relieve headaches associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. Many people who suffer from CFS experience disruptive sleep and don't feel rested in the morning. If this is the case for you, talk to your doctor about solutions. She may prescribe an antidepressant to help you sleep more soundly. Participating in a sleep study can diagnose sleep disorders that may contribute to your unrest and the resulting headaches.
4. Try Acupuncture
Alternative measures such as acupuncture and accupressure are experimental therapies that are used to treat symptoms of CFS, including headaches. An acupuncturist inserts very fine needles at various pressure points in your body to realign your body's energy, called the "qi." Acupressure manipulates the same pressure points with touch rather than needles. These practices have been used for thousands of years as part of traditional Chinese medicine as a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory agent.
5. Reduce Stress
Reducing the amount of stress in your life, always easier said than done, may give you some relief if your headaches are a result of tension. It's not uncommon for people with chronic fatigue syndrome to feel a lot of stress because they don't know why they have this condition and are never sure from day to day how they will feel. Speaking to a counselor may help you sort out your feelings and relieve some of the pressure you're feeling. Try to enjoy a hobby when you feel up to it. Listen to some classical music to clear your mind and relax your body.
