Taking care of your reproductive health is important. If you are a woman, this means getting your annual pelvic exam and PAP smear, practicing safe sex and avoiding high-risk behaviors that put you at risk for an unplanned pregnancy. It is important to prioritize your reproductive health care.
STDs and HIV
The Center for Disease Control reports that there are over 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases a year. Most of them involve young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common. Practicing abstinence if you are not in a monogamous relationship is one way to ensure that you do not acquire an STD or HIV. If you are sexually active, know your partner's sexual history, and use a condom every time (and use it properly). If you think you have put yourself at risk for STDs or HIV, get tested.
Unplanned Pregnancy
Getting pregnant unexpactadly can be devastating for some, and can also lead to health issues. The CDC reports that women who have an unplanned pregnancy may be less likely to get prenatal care which can lead to problems with the pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association reports that 3 million women use no contraception, which leads to 47 percent of pregnancies being unplanned. Delaying sex until you are ready to deal with getting pregnant is an option, as is talking to your gynecologist about your plan for pregnancy prevention.
Unidentified and Untreated Reproductive Health Problems
Planned Parenthood recommends getting a pelvic exam when you are 21 or three years after your first intercourse, whichever comes first. Depending on your history and needs, your gynecologist will decide how often you need a pelvic exam. A pelvic exam most times includes a pap smear, which is a test for cervical cancer. The doctor will check your vagina for irregularities or problems. She may test you for STDs, if necessary. The gynecologist will also check your uterus and behind for other problems or abnormalities such as tumors. She will also do a breast exam and, depending on your age, may recommend a mammogram. The exam with your gynecologist is preventive, quick and easy. Identifying reproductive health problems is important so that they can get treated earlier and prevent further complications and problems for your reproductive organs.
