Dry, frizzy hair can look lackluster and be difficult to style. Fortunately, many different treatments are available to smooth and soften hair. Each of these treatments will improve the look and texture of your hair on its own, but combining the treatments will yield quicker and more dramatic results.
Gentle Shampoos
Choose a shampoo labeled for children, for color-treated hair or as extra moisturizing. Avoid clarifying or deep-cleaning shampoos, which can strip existing moisture from the hair, drying it even more and leading to additional frizz.
Shampooing less frequently as well. Dry hair will not look greasy if you switch to an every-other-day or even a two- or three-day-a-week washing cycle. On the days that you don't wash your hair, simply rinse it thoroughly to remove styling products and conditioners.
Conditioner Types
Use a moisturizing conditioner every time you shampoo, allowing it to soak into hair for at least two minutes before rinsing. Use a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week. Allow the deep conditioner to remain in the hair for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. Hot oil treatments and moisturizing hair masks also are good choices for a weekly deep-conditioning treatment.
Hair Styling Products
Ladies Home Journal recommends a variety of styling products to fight frizz. Products that contain silicone smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and adding shine. Hair gels repel moisture, also reducing frizz. Hair pomades add weight, preventing dry, flyaway hair. Experiment with different styling products until you find the combination that works for you. Regardless of what styling products you use, finish with a light spritz of hairspray. This will help prevent moisture in the air from penetrating the cuticle, thus avoiding frizz.
Avoid Heat
Heat is very damaging to hair, so avoiding heat exposure can be an effective way to reduce dryness and frizz. When possible, allow hair to air-dry, rather than using a hair dryer. Get a haircut that allows you to style your hair without using a flat iron, curling iron or hot rollers on a daily basis. When you do use heat styling, spray your hair with a heat protectant before you begin and don't overheat your hair.
