3 Ways to Control West Nile Virus

1. Watch Closely for Complications

While you've probably seen a lot of West Nile virus coverage in your local media, particularly during the summer, the fact is that most people infected by the virus recover without medical intervention. Very young children and the elderly are the only populations considered to be at elevated risk for developing problematic symptoms.

However, your doctor will observe you closely to see whether you show any signs of secondary complications of West Nile virus infection. These can include potentially serious infections such as encephalitis and meningitis. Early detection and intervention will be your key to making a full recovery if you do develop any complications, so you should talk to your doctor immediately if you develop any symptoms.

2. Interferon Therapy: Look to the Future

Lurking just over the horizon is a new therapy which will be used to control encephalitis caused by West Nile virus in the future. It's called interferon therapy. Interferons are proteins produced by the immune system, and increasing their presence can help fight off viral infections. They are usually given by injection.

Preliminary studies indicate that people who take interferon drugs recover from West Nile virus infection faster than those who don't. While further study is needed and is already underway, these drugs could one day form the basis of West Nile virus treatment.

3. Prevention Is the Best Cure

There's no better way to treat West Nile virus than to keep it out of your body in the first place. You should cover up when outdoors, especially around dawn and dusk, and wear insect repellents on both exposed skin and clothing. Get rid of any standing water on your property, and call your local animal control authorities if you spot any suspiciously sick or dead birds.
