Daily Supplement for Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are a common form of vaginitis, or swelling of the vagina. The infection is typically caused by a fungus called candida, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are both prescription and over-the-counter medications available to treat yeast infections. Since yeast infections can be recurring for some women, many people prefer to treat them with natural supplements.

Causes

The candida fungus is constantly present in a normal vagina. A yeast infection occurs when there is too much candida present. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, yeast infections are most common in women who are pregnant or who suffer from diabetes. Certain antibiotics also cause yeast infections. The Mayo Clinic recommends that people who are more susceptible to yeast infections avoid feminine hygiene products, bubble baths, vaginal contraceptives and damp clothing, because they can increase the likelihood of a yeast infection.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a yeast infection typically include a thick, cottage-cheese like discharge and a foul smell. Burning and itchiness may also occur. It's typically more comfortable to wear loose-fitting clothing if any of these symptoms are present. Over-the-counter creams and suppositories are available to treat the symptoms, but only a health-care provider can diagnose a yeast infection.

Supplements

There are a variety of natural products and supplements that claim to prevent or cure yeast infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the few with any proven benefits is the probiotic--Lactobacillus acidophilus. This probiotic is found naturally in many yogurts and is also available in supplement form. The supplements can be taken daily to prevent yeast infections. Always speak to a health-care provider before taking any new supplement to discuss dosing and possible side effects.

Misconceptions

Yeast infections are not a sexually transmitted disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, other forms of vaginitis can be sexually transmitted. Therefore, it's important to rule out other possibilities before engaging in sexual activity. While sex during a yeast infection might cause some discomfort for the woman, it will not worsen the condition.

Warning

Yeast infections generally aren't any more problematic than the discomfort they cause. However, yeast infections in pregnant women are associated with preterm labor and low birth weight, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pregnant women who show signs of a yeast infection should contact their obstetrician right away.
