Weight is a sensitive issue for teenage girls. Many girls begin to obsess about their appearance as they are bombarded with images of the standard beautiful, thin woman. At the same time, their bodies are beginning to change and become curvier. Teenage girls should be taught to respect their bodies and be confident in who they are regardless of their body type. However, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, teenage obesity is a rising problem that can set a teen up for a lifetime of health and social issues.

Support

Teenage girls who want to lose weight should join a responsible support group or receive support from parents, doctors or therapists. Weight loss should only be encouraged if the teen is overweight or obese. Emphasis for all teen girls should be placed on learning how to live a healthy lifestyle based on a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Eat More Fruits and Veggies

Many diets focus on restricting calories and foods. Teenagers need enough calories to support growing and developing bodies. To lose weight, young girls should focus on adding more fruits and vegetables to their diets. These foods are high in fiber and water content, which will satisfy the appetite and reduce cravings for junk foods. They also contain a variety of essential vitamins and minerals to keep a teen healthy.

Balanced Diet

A teen's diet should consist of vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grain carbohydrates and low-fat dairy. Breakfast is important to avoid overeating later in the day. Three balanced meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) as well as a couple of healthy snacks in between will help a teen eat healthfully throughout the day.

Physical Activity

Exercise is important to help a teen reach and maintain a healthy weight. According to the Nemours Foundation, teens should get about 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity daily. Team sports, such as soccer, lacrosse and field hockey are teach leadership and social building in addition to burning calories. Dance class or ice skating can help burn calories in a fun environment. Dog walking is exercise for animal lovers.
