1. Understanding Subtle Energy
Chakras are energy centers located along the base of the spine that correlate to different emotional and physical functions. There are traditionally seven chakras that start at the base of the spine and continue up the spine until the crown. Each energy center is viewed in Eastern philosophy as a spinning center of vital energy that controls things like eyesight, generosity, intuition, and mental acuity. Learning the various chakra correlations is an important step to take before attempting to clean them. Yoga asanas provide a foundation to begin cleaning out chakras through movement through different postures. Various postures correlate to various chakras and will heal imbalances that could be causing emotional or physical stress. Visit your local bookstore or visit the web and search chakras for specific information on these seven energy centers.
2. Opening the Lotus
Kundalini yoga is a practice especially designed to awaken and heal the seven energy centers of the body. Asanas are paired with vocalizations or breathing techniques especially designed to zero in on specific energies and revitalize the body, mind and soul into balance. Kundalini yoga is best learned from a learned professional and integrated slowly into a yoga routine. Too much Kundalini awakening could result in emotional, physiological and psychological trauma and actually impede growth. The chakra energy centers are often referred to as resembling lotus flowers and awakening their energy is likened to opening the petals of a lotus. However forcing the petals to open could result in ripping or damaging the beauty of the flower itself. Deliberate work on chakras using Kundalini yoga postures should be taken at a pace that is comfortable for you and should be tempered with plenty of grounding exercises.
3. Cleaning out the Mess.
Kundalini chakra cleansing is traditionally comprised of a series of cleansing movements and exercises that clean each chakra out one by one while rebalancing them with vital and loving energy. Using breath techniques, sound techniques, movements, dietary modifications (such as water cleansing, and bathing) and chanting the energy centers slowly begin to awaken and revitalize the dormant prana (energy) within the body. Kundalini yoga cleansing breath is a skill that must be properly learned to prevent hyperventilation or fatigue. Typically the breath is taken in rapidly through the mouth held in the stomach and then expelled quickly through the nose. This cleansing breath has dramatic effects on consciousness and allows for the cleansing process to progress properly. A chakra cleansing Kundalini yoga practice is best when done 3 times a week interspersed with standard yoga practice that promotes grounding and centering.
