1. Tradition Is Good
The twinkle starts with a traditional waltz box step. Stand opposite your partner and place your right hand on his waist. Lift up your left hand and bend at the elbow to hold your partner's left hand. Grasp her hand lightly without squeezing. When the waltz music begins, step forward on the first beat with your left foot. Upon the second beat, step forward and to the right with your right foot to form an upside-down L. Transfer your weight to your right foot while keeping your left firmly planted on the ground. With the third beat, slide your left foot over to your right so that your feet are together. Step back with your right foot on the fourth beat. When the fifth beat hits, step back and to the left with your left foot. Transfer your weight to your left foot then slide your right foot to the left on the sixth beat to bring your feet together. Repeat this box step twice to lead in to the twinkle.
2. Add a Little Twinkle, Twinkle
After waltzing two sets of box steps, it is time to move into the twinkle. Transition in to waltzing the twinkle by shifting your weight to your right foot and lead your dance partner to the right. On the first count, step forward so your left foot crosses over your right, being careful not to trip. On the second count, move your right foot in towards the left so your feet come back together. Transition your weight to your right foot on the third count and repeat the waltz steps. This time you move towards your left.
3. Dance Two by Two
When waltzing the twinkle you must do everything in sets of two. If you perform a waltz step on one foot, it must also be performed on the other. After the initial two sets of the traditional box steps, you must complete at least two sets of the twinkle in your waltz. After waltzing two complete sets of the twinkle, return to the box steps and waltz two sets. Depending upon how much room you have to dance, you can complete as many even sets as you want as long as you have an equal amount of moving to the left as you do of moving to the right. Make sure you have enough room to finish what you start.
