Severe hair loss can be devastating to the ego. Most people lose up to 100 hairs per day, but more will grow back in their place. If you notice more hair than usual in the sink, on the shower floor, or on your hairbrush, you may want to contact your doctor to find out if the cause is health related.

Healthy Diet

A healthy head of hair needs to be well fed, and since hair is made of protein, you need to consume sufficient protein. Other nutrients that will keep your hair and scalp healthy and strong include the B vitamins, vitamin C, biotin and folic acid.

Hair Stress

Constant stress on the strands of hair can cause hair loss. Don't wear accessories that put stress on the hair. Avoid tight cornrows, ponytails and pigtails that may snap off the hair at the scalp or pull it out from the root. Cut back on hair chemicals, such as hair dye and permanents that can dry out each strand and cause it to snap. Some of the chemicals may also inflame the hair follicle that causes the hair to fall out.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Keep your hair clean with a mild shampoo. Massage your scalp to increase the blood flow to the hair follicles. Condition your hair each time you wash it to keep it moisturized and prevent it from becoming dry. Brittle hair can fall out or break off. Choose a conditioner with proteins.

Scalp Massage

Massage your scalp daily to increase circulation in that area. Use your fingertips, and starting at the nape of your neck, rub in a circular motion. Work toward the front, until your whole head has been massaged.

Avoid the Sun

Your scalp can become sunburned just like the rest of your body. When this happens, you may notice some hair breakage or fall-out. Before you expose your hair to the sun, use sunscreen on your scalp or coat your hair with a conditioner that contains sunscreen.

Medical Evaluation

If you suddenly see a massive amount of hair falling out in clumps, you may have a health issue that needs attention. Contact your doctor and ask for an evaluation to see if you have hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, a hormone imbalance, a fungal infection or other medical issue that can cause you to lose hair. Treating the cause of the condition may prevent further hair loss.
If you're suffering from male pattern baldness, the doctor may recommend one of the medications created specifically for this type of hair loss. You don't need a prescription for Minoxidil, but if that doesn't work, the doctor may prescribe finasteride.
